16 Aug 2010: It’s Not Just About Fish

International Conference: Social and Cultural Perspectives of Sustainable Marine Fisheries

The global marine fishing industry is undergoing major restructuring driven by fisheries management and policy responses to ecological problems in key stocks. Many commentators and policymakers refer to a ‘crisis' in fisheries. Key stocks are in serious decline and the livelihoods of fishers, especially those in smaller fishing communities, are threatened as never before.

This conference aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from across the globe to explore the social and cultural aspects of sustainable marine fisheries management. In Europe, the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, and in the UK, the new Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) have focused much attention on the marine and coastal environment and resources.

The conference will seek to explore the relationships between fishing, fishing communities and the broader community (residential and business) to assess the barriers and opportunities for the future sustainability and prosperity of these communities.

Sessions will address the following themes:

  • Sense of place and identity in fishing communities
  • Fishing, tourism and marketing
  • Social impacts of fisheries
  • Culture and heritage in fishing communities
  • The ethical marketplace and demand for authentic local produce
  • Anthropological studies of fishing communities
  • Social objectives and fishing policy
  • Women and gender roles in fisheries
  • Economic impacts of fisheries
  • Diversification of fishing activities

The first call for papers and posters will be issued in September 2010 and abstracts will be sought from researchers from around the world to give a truly global perspective.

All papers should be submitted and presented in English.
